‘WORLD MOSQUITO DAY’ Celebrations observed in Hyderabad

‘World Mosquito Day’ (WMD) Observed annually on 20th August in commemoration of India born – Noble prize winner Sir Ronald Ross discovery in 1897 that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans. World Mosquito Day gives people the opportunity to learn about Mosquito Growth, Control measures and prevention of Mosquito borne diseases like Malaria, Dengue and other vector diseases etc.

In view of the World Mosquito Day on 20th August GHMC has organized advocacy campaign and rallies in all the circles with students to accelerate the efforts towards prevention and control of Malaria and other Vector Borne Diseases. Corporators, Wards Committee members, local leaders, officials of GHMC are participated.  

GHMC is taking up large scale IEC activities during this year, in schools, colleges, sensitizing women groups, residential welfare associations and group meetings in slums, pasting of door stickers and posters. In addition to regular preventive and control measures to create awareness among the people Hyderabad to take preventive measures at household level.

In addition to above IEC Activities GHMC has developed Mosquito APP Hyderabad with (17) informative questions on Dengue, Malaria and Mosquito life cycle, breeding habits and source reduction methods etc. This is an innovative attempt to familiarize the public with mosquito control and preventive methods. The objective of this Mosquito App is creating awareness among all the people of Hyderabad to practice mosquito control and measures at household level and their surroundings but not for increasing download counts. Amongst participants who answer all questions correctly, every month lucky draw shall be taken for 10 members where Rs.10,000/- cash prize shall be given under CSR to each lucky draw winner. This programme shall motivate the citizens of Hyderabad to participate in this exercise in large number.

So, far 1218 schools covered under awareness programmes and 90 sensitizing meeting conducted for SHG groups, 117 sensitization programmes conducted to Residential Welfare Associations and 1240 rallies conducted. The awareness programmes will be conducted in the all educational institutions in coordination with education department, slums & SHGs in coordination with UCD Wing, Offices & RWAs.
